To the newcomer to the Foundation's work these concluding words from "77k Socinl Meaning of the Pounda.tiori for Integrated /-.I'luuli'viic'' iwiv be timely: (Thearticle from which this is extracted is available in reprintform upon request, and tctti be on Aoiici at the Workshop.)What the Foundation for Integrated Educationseeks is to preserve and enhance the revolutionaryadvances of the sciences during the [last lew centuries and especially tin- past -,ci years. Future advances of incalculable benefit to mankind arcthreatened by the current turmoil and confusion.Out of the welter of esoteric and disturbing discoveries and theories must come some sense of purpose and direction or man, in a wild negativethrust, will throw out all that he has gained. Thecurrent "revolt against intelleetualism," as it iscalled, provides most immediate evidence of thisgrave danger. In conclusion, then, it becomes clear that theFoundation seeks to advance ibe cause of understanding in several directions. It desires to open upto all an understanding of the I run tiers of knowledge in all disciplines: it envisages an eventualunderstanding of the mcaninsrfillness and unity ofthe whole ol knon ledge in this and other cultures;and it works toward the development of a commonlanguage which will enable scholaicate not only with each other but ividi knowledgeable people everywhere. If we want world peace, we must be intellectually equal to the materials of the times. Mankind must speak a universal language of ideas. Todo this, we need a common conceptual knowledge through which all may share in cultural advances of the West and cultural heritage of theEast and of antiquity. When men understand incommon the orders and meanings of the planetand universe which are their home, they canstart to achieve a common peace; for peace restson understanding and conflict rests on ignorance. This is the social message of the Foundation.Integrative thinking and education are in noway opposed to specialization but instead supplya supplement and a corrective. The worth of adiamond is not to be found in its facets alone.Cutting its surface- discloses iis brilliance: but thebeauty is in the diamond ilse-lf. and the way inwhich it may best be cut to reveal its loveliness inlight is determined by our knowledge of its internal order. Specialties help man to see the natural and human world in all aspects more clearly;integration can help him see it whole and use itslatent order to noblest ends.THE FOUNDATION FOR INTEGRATED EDUCATION246 East 46th Street, New York 17, N. llr. F. T. KurilTrie Foundation for Integrated Education, Inc.£1>6 East lr6th Street(Jew York 17, 'few lorkDear Dr. KunaiI carefully read your integrating paper, end here aru my reactionsto It.I do not have any quarrel v.itl. its main propositions, but I find itexceedingly complex and some.it, at difficult to grasp by especially theaverage intelligent person. Tbis complexity probably is due to twothings. First, to the all-embracing character cf your platform and, second, tc ti.e brevity of the thesis expressing it. Another point ofyour paper is its overatress of sciance, and particularly physical sciences and underemphasls of other great values. lour standpoint appearsto ne as the standpoint of "religion of scientist." These criticismsas mentioned concern not the real substance cf your main principles, butthe expressions of theae principles In your thesis.filth best wishes,Sincerely yours,Pitirin A. Sorokin

Dear Sorokin:I do hope you can very promptly lenda hand on these two matters-To Council members:You will be glad to know that our application tothe J. H. Whitney Foundation is on the agenda, despitemany difficulties which very nearly prevented. Everything in respect to this now depends upon the convictionthat the letters of the members of our Council, and ourclose friends, may convey to Mr. Park. Please bearin mind that besides an immediate substantial bit ofhelp, we believe it is possible to set up a continuingrelationship with Mr. Whitney and his colleagues. You will be interested to know also that Mr.William C. Segal, the publisher and general editor ofGENTRY, and of TEXTILES,has very kindly agreed toprepare a dignified brief description of the work ofthe Foundation such as would appeal to men of substancecapable of understanding and of responding to our work.It has been thus far agreed that we shall stressthe importance of the Foundation's work if natural orderand confidence in a meaningful universe are to be restored to the very center of the curriculum.Would you be willing to write a brief paragraphwhich could be used over your name leading out fromthis central idea or leading toward it? This latteritem is quite as urgent as the development of ourrelationship with the J. H. Whitney Foundation. Pleasesend your brief paragraph to me here.P. L. KunzDecember 9, 1953Kunz _J
