Social and Cultural Dynamics (review)
Review of Sorokin's Social and Cultural Dynamics is aimed at analyzing the patterns of human conduct and human accomplishments, organizing and viewing them as a whole. In the opinion of the reviewer Sorokin's work differs from his predecessors. Firstly the shear amount of material collected by Sorokin and his collaborators covering all fields of history and cultural development; secondly being aware of the weaknesses of his predecessors Sorokin avoids the same mistakes by not being bias, letting the facts speak fort themselves. In the reviewer's opinion Sorokin writes not as a philosopher or prophet, but as a sociologist aware of procedural problems and constantly checking; thirdly, he is systematic surveying the various types of human behaviors, establishing the changes in each field, how long they last and in what order they occur. He uses data as a point of departure unlike his predecessors, who used the data as an illustration. The reviewer predicts that this monumental study will serve as a source and guide for the student of the philosophy of history in years to come
