Sorokin : Counselor to Reaction
Subject Heading
Sorokin, Pitirim A., Sociology
Description
A review of Social and Cultural Dynamics reprinted from Vol.III, no. 2 (Spring 1939) of Science and Society. As stated by Guthrie, the whole of Sorokin's analysis hinges on the notion that there are no linear, evolutionary or cyclical trends in culture, but merely fluctuations. he see three types of "integrated" cultural systems or "mentalities" Ideational, Sensate and Idealist. Of these, he regards only the first two as "pure", the Idealist being a mixture of the other two forms. There are also many other "mixed" forms of mentality, but they are of the "non-integrate" variety.

Description
Sorokin forecasts a crisis of the Sensate culture that has dominated the Western World during the last five centuries gleaned from the statistical data collected. "A transitory period looms before us and coming generations, perhaps with their nightmares, frightening shadows, and heart- rendering horrors. Beyond it, however, the dawn of a new great Ideational culture is probably waiting to greet the men of the future" . Some of Sorokin's deductions are examined more closely in the following review. Social and Cultural Dynamics (review)
Subject Heading
Sorokin, Pitirim A., Sociology, Human relations, Philosophy, Culture, Book review, Civilization, Culture and society, Social theory
Description
Review of Sorokin's Social and Cultural Dynamics is aimed at analyzing the patterns of human conduct and human accomplishments, organizing and viewing them as a whole. In the opinion of the reviewer Sorokin's work differs from his predecessors. Firstly the shear amount of material collected by Sorokin and his collaborators covering all fields of history and cultural development; secondly being aware of the weaknesses of his predecessors Sorokin avoids the same mistakes by not being bias, letting the facts speak fort themselves. In the reviewer's opinion Sorokin writes not as a philosopher or prophet, but as a sociologist aware of procedural problems and constantly checking; thirdly, he is systematic surveying the various types of human behaviors, establishing the changes in each field, how long they last and in what order they occur. He uses data as a point of departure unlike his predecessors, who used the data as an illustration. The reviewer predicts that this monumental study will serve as a source and guide for the student of the philosophy of history in years to come
